Hannah Gage was elected the first woman to lead the board of governors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Gage, the founder and former owner of Cape Fear Broadcasting Co. in Wilmington, has been on the board since 2001 and serves as chair of its committee on personnel and tenure. Gage graduated from UNC-CH in 1975. Estelle Sanders, the mayor of Roper, N.C., was re-elected board secretary. The board sets policy for the 17 schools in the UNC system.


Michelle Rich Goode, president and founder of Rich Commercial Realty in Raleigh, received the Meredith College 2008 Alumnae Philanthropy Award, given to an alumna who has demonstrated her commitment to Meredith through her involvement in the life of the college and her philanthropy.


Traci Brown was named director of communications for Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina, a Raleigh-based non profit organization dedicated to improving the educational system.

 

Arts

Suzanne Rousso is the new artistic director for Mallarmé Chamber Players, based in Durham. She replaces founder Anna Ludwig Wilson, who is retiring after 25 years. Mallarmé is a nationally acclaimed group of professional musicians, performing in mixed ensembles of three to seven artists.


Local playwright Kim Moore’s “Give It Up, Turn It Loose,” a contemporary play developed from a series of monologues, will be produced by Raleigh’s Theatre in the Park in August.

Winners of the 13th District’s Congressional Art Contest included Kathleen Petermann of Enloe High School, “LA Farmer’s Market #4: The Reader” (first place); and Katie Darden of Cary High School, “Smoggy Future” (third place).


Linda Charlton was named director of marketing of the Durham Performing Arts Center.


Dawn Shamp, Durham author of “On Account of Conspicuous Women,” received the first Making Democracy Work Award from the Orange, Durham and Chatham County chapters of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina, which honored her contribution to a renewed awareness of the struggle for women’s suffrage through her novel.


Shirlette Ammons, from Durham, is the author of “Matching Skin,” a book of poetry published by Carolina Wren Press.


Business

Anna Baird Choi joined Allen and Pinnix, a Raleigh law firm.


Leah Brown of Cary’s Aten Solutions, which specializes in clinical research, clinical data management, statistical programming and biostatistics, was one of the highest-grossing entrepreneurs among more than 48,000 women in the Make Mine a Million $ Business competition.


Jill Wells Heath, president and CEO of Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, which specializes in civil engineering and consulting in Raleigh and Cary, announced it was named one of the top 500 design firms in the country by the Engineering News-Record.


Lorana Price, CEO of Holy Cow Branding, a strategic branding firm in Cary, announced that it earned:
• A silver award in the 2008 Summit International Creative Awards for its holiday “Prosperi-tea” promotional card and gift;
• Three Hermes Creative Awards, which recognize excellence in marketing and communications programs and materials; and
• Two MarCom Awards for outstanding creative work.


Sharon Hill, president of Chapel Hill’s Sharon Hill International, announced:
• Hill will be a featured speaker for the Women’s Executive Education Leadership Series, held at the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce.
