Carolyn Maness and Katherine R. Teague, both of Raleigh, and Sheree Hedrick of Wendell, were elected to three-year terms on the Peace College board of visitors.
LaChauna Sumpter recently was named director of public relations in the Department of Institutional Advancement at Shaw University in Raleigh.
Duke University School of Medicine finished in fifth place among the nation’s top medical schools funded by the National Institutes of Health. The school also saw a funding increase from NIH of more than 20 percent, the highest among the nation’s top-20 institutions.
Gail Lee, of Raleigh, served as an educator to the Communities in Education program and was on the organization’s selection committee to choose the “Power of One” award winner.
Dana N. Lewis, of Marshallberg, was awarded a Police Corps scholarship and has been assigned to the Smithfield Police Department.

Donna D. Wade, a songwriter from Garner, recently saw her song, “As Americans We Stand,” included on a patriotic album entitled “American Pride.” The album was released by J.I.P. Records of Nashville.
Nicole Kennedy’s award winning beach-people artwork is featured in the July issue of Wrightsville Beach magazine as well as in the September issue of Southern Living.
Raleigh author June Spence’s debut novel, “Change Baby,” will be released in September.

Van Eure, owner of the Angus Barn restaurant in Raleigh, was awarded The 2004 Gold Plate, the food industry’s highest honor, and was named 2004 Foodservice Operator of the Year by the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association.
Amy Mastrogiuseppe, a graphic designer, was recently hired by R+M, an advertising agency in Cary.
Lauren Kennedy opened a feng shui consultation business in Raleigh, offering services such as traditional feng shui cures, space clearing and de-cluttering.

Organizations
Pines of Carolina Girl Scout Council named Jean Gambrill development associate. She will coordinate the Family Partnership Campaign and corporate donations. Also, Valerie McDevitt was named director of product sales.
Rene Campbell was appointed executive director of the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau.
Linda Leake, president of Change by Leake in Raleigh, Sheila Hale Ogle, founder of Media Research, Planning and Placement Inc. in Cary and Margaret C. Riddle, a master flight instructor in Raleigh, were elected to the Women’s Forum of North Carolina board of directors. The organization is composed of female leaders who work to achieve equality and maintain social, economic and political power for women. Riddle also was named chairperson of the Governance Committee.
Jennifer Snyder, a personal coach for women, and Tricia Santos, a computer trainer and consultant, recently founded Triangle Women Business Owners in Durham. The organization helps women grow their businesses through relationships and learning.
Victory Junction Gang Camp, a 75-acre camp for kids with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, opened last month in Randleman. Kyle and Pattie Petty founded the camp in honor of their son, Adam, who died in a 2000 racing accident.
Sue Tripp, character education coordinator for the Wake County public school system and former Apex middle school principal, spoke at the Character Builders FlexTix kickoff in Raleigh. The program is a partnership among schools, area professional and college sports teams, and entertainment and cultural organizations to raise money for Wake County public schools.
The Sunshine Lady Foundation, a private family foundation established by Doris Buffett, made a $10,000 contribution to the YWCA of the Greater Triangle to benefit the residents of the Women in Transition program. Also, Dorothy V. Ashworth, YWCA president, received a Wake County Board of Commissioners’ Volunteer Award for her active leadership and commitment to the YWCA.
The Foundation of Hope, for the research and treatment of mental illness, approved funding for five research projects. The foundation was established by the late Thad and Alice Eure of Raleigh.
Annemarie Evans is the newly elected president of the League of Women Voters of Wake County.
Joyce Aschenbrenner, vice president of The V Foundation for cancer research, was given the Trailblazer Award by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
