Susan Watkins Davis of Raleigh, Sue Donathan White of Greensboro and Patricia Daniels Woronoff of Durham were elected to the board of trustees for Peace College in Raleigh.
Pegeen Reichert Powell, a post-doctoral lecturing fellow at Duke University in Durham and co-founder of Parents@Duke, won the 2004 Raising a Ruckus Award from Working Mother magazine.
Mary Cantando, author of “Nine Lives: Stories of Women Business Owners Landing on Their Feet,” attended Mark Victor Hansen’s Mega Book Marketing event in Atlanta, a training seminar for authors.
Arts
Mary B. Regan, the executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, received the Preserve America Presidential Award for the organization’s work with the Blue Ridge Heritage Initiative. President Bush presented her with the award.
Regina Barnhill won Durham’s American Dance Festival T-shirt design contest.
Deep Dish Theater Company in Chapel Hill is offering a 10-week, introductory acting class, featuring the Meisner technique.
The Garden Gallery, which sells original art, sculpture, pottery and jewelry, recently opened in Raleigh.
Susan Elkins Reda joined the Nancy Tuttle May Studio in Durham as a corporate and private-sales representative.
Caroline Mallonée, a graduate composition student at Duke University in Durham, was awarded the ASCAP Foundation/Morton Gould Young Composer Award. This recognition is given annually to encourage young American composers. Mallonée also received a Fulbright from the university to study in the Netherlands and an International Fellowship from the Graduate School.

Peggy A. Kernodle of Durham, Dyan Nemetz-McCleery of Cary, Linda Tuorto of Cary, and Jacqueline Yow of Apex were certified by the Council for Qualification of Residential Interior Designers and were accepted as professional members of the Interior Design Society.
Lana Calloway, president of Exhibit Resources; Mary Greune, president of Temporary Living Company; Erika Mangrum, president of Iatria Day Spas; and Judy Smith, president of Smith Seal of NC, were featured panelists at the National Association of Women Business Owners April luncheon.

Pamela S. Douglas, M.D., former head of the section of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Wisconsin, was named the new chief of Duke University Medical Center’s division of cardiology.
Dr. Janice Hong, medical director of Raleigh Vein & Laser Center and a board certified vascular surgeon, recently opened her practice, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of varicose and spider veins.
Nina Mrakuzic, owner of La Therapie Day Spa, and her husband were featured in a recent issue of The Cary News, in an article detailing the couple’s immigration from Croatia and the expansion of the spa. Also, spa manager Pegg S. Hoffman and staff members were pictured in a recent issue of Marie Claire. They provided massage and beauty treatments during the December shopping night at Streets of Southpoint hosted by the magazine.
The surgical facility in the office of Cynthia M. Gregg in Cary was accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.
Kile Law of Blue Water Spa donated $20,000 to the 2004 Communities in Schools Educational Ball held this month in Raleigh.
Christine E. Lee, medical director of The Eye Institute of North Carolina in Durham, was named a GOLD surgeon by LaserVision, a subsidiary of TLC Vision Corp., a provider of refractive laser service programs.
Iatria Health Center in Raleigh announced:
- Dr. Angela Baylis, owner of the center, was named one of Triangle Business Journal’s “40 Under 40.”
- Lori Bridges was promoted to team leader and esthetic training manager of Iatria Day Spas.
The facility is celebrating its fourth year of operation. - Mary Ann E. Black of Duke University Health System in Durham was one of the 2004 recipients of the Josephine Dobbs Clement Award for exemplary community leadership in public education.
Real Estate
Cindy Poole of the North Hills office of York Simpson Underwood, Raleigh, received the community service volunteer of the year award from the Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORS. Also, Celeste Allen and Anna Smith, broker associates with the Cameron Village office, received Accredited Buyer Representative designations from the association’s Real Estate Buyer’s Agent Council.

Patricia G. Cardwell of Durham is the first female promoted to sergeant major in the North Carolina National Guard.
Sherry Lehman of Raleigh received the June Stallings Award from the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated long-term, creative efforts on behalf of adolescent pregnancy prevention.
Kimberly A. Jones joined the Downtown Raleigh Alliance as assistant to the organization’s president and CEO, Margaret Mullen.
