Lorana Price, CEO and creative director of Holy Cow Branding in Cary, was named an advisor to the board of the Achievement Academy of Durham. Price will help the academy develop a professional image and reputation in the community. The Achievement Academy of Durham enables hard-working students who have dropped out of high school and are living in poverty to become employed citizens by pairing formal education with the teaching of personal and leadership skills.


Lorraine Stephens, president of Lorraine Speaks and L. Stephens & Associates of Raleigh, was named to the first Diversity Advisory Board of the N.C. State University College of Management. The board’s initial meeting focused on bringing together diversity leaders, managers and directors from 14 Triangle-area companies with strong diversity initiatives and three College of Management faculty members.


Arts

The American Dance Festival, based in Durham, will award distinguished choreographer and musician Laura Dean with the 2008 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. The annual, $50,000 honor recognizes those who have dedicated their lives and talent to the creation of modern dance.


Raleigh artist Suzy Andron will donate a percentage of all sales of her artwork to benefit the Alliance of AIDS Services Carolina. Over the years, Andron has become intimately involved with the group, donating artwork to the Triangle’s annual Works of Heart Art Auction Against AIDS and supporting it in various capacities. Andron specializes in painting abstract art in a format known as polytych.  


The Raleigh Professional Women’s Forum, an organization of professionals and executives, announced that First Citizens Bank and WakeMed Health & Hospitals will be title sponsors for the 2008 Pages to Podium luncheon, set for April 24 at the Brier Creek Country Club. Pages to Podium is a biannual author’s series that brings a national speaker to the Triangle. This year it’s Kathy Reichs, renowned forensic anthropologist, best-selling author and inspiration for the television series, “Bones.”


Cary’s Sonya May has written “The Joy Commitment: Live the Life You Want to Live,” which asks why we settle for being fairly happy when we can be really happy. May, who is also a speaker and seminar leader, teaches about the power of conscious choice.


Devin Cofield, CEO of Trinity Consulting Services, has written “Emotional Wellness for Women,” published through the Professional Woman Network. This is the first of a three-part series on women’s health from Cofield, who lives in Holly Springs.


Business

Rondy McKee, co-owner of White Tiger Taekwondo in Cary, was the focus of the cover story in Taekwondo Times Magzine. McKee recently tested for her 6th degree black belt in Olympic Style Taekwondo and holds an additional 13 black belt ranks in other styles. In addition to various business awards, White Tiger, which has more than 2,500 active students, was given the Community Service Award by the Chamber of Commerce for continuing efforts to raise money for charity. McKee began her martial arts training more than 20 years ago as a means of self-defense.


Christie Lasater was named vice president, marketing manager of Capital Bank in Raleigh.


Entrée Vous announced that it now has 4 locations in the Triangle, all owned by women.
Peggy Bloodworth is the owner of Entrée Vous on Renaissance Parkway in Durham, Maria Calabretta and Valerie Gallagher have the Cary/Morrisville location on Davis Drive, Catherine Caputo is the owner at Towne North on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh and Erin Cohen owns the location at Poyner Place in Raleigh. Entrée Vous, a meal preparation kitchen, offers customers a number of options for buying meals. They can assemble their own food or have it made for them to be ready for pick up.


Julie Chapin signed an agreement to open Dogtopia, a full-service dog daycare, spa and boarding facility in Durham.  The business manager is her friend Elaine Anninos. This will be the third Dogtopia in the Triangle, following locations in development in Raleigh and Cary.


SFL+a Architects of Raleigh announced:
Kerryn House has joined the firm as an accountant. She is responsible for personnel management, purchasing, auditing and bookkeeping.
Patricia Brezny has joined the firm as an intern architect. Her responsibilities include managing project progress, coordinating with consultants, drafting architectural designs, and establishing and maintaining budgets for projects.


Mary Cantando, Raleigh-based president of WomanBusinessOwner.com, announced:
• The final phase of a national search to collect quotes for the 2009 page-a-day calendar for women business owners. Each day of the Woman’s Advantage calendar will feature a great idea of 20 words or less, along with the name, company name and Web site of the woman who submitted it.
• Cantando was was named co-chair for the Women Impacting Public Policy national Elizabeth Dole Young Entrepreneur Scholarship Program. The program, designed to recognize young women business owners who see the importance and value in community involvement and leadership, gives one winner a business grant, the opportunity to serve as the spokeswoman for young female entrepreneurs and to meet with national leaders.

Dovecote Home & Garden in Pittsboro’s Fearrington Village has reopened after an extensive renovation. Decorative concrete floors stained in an earthy bronze tone lend warmth and an organic feel. In business more than two decades, Dovecote offers everything from bath items by Molton Brown to Barclay Butera furniture.


Matti Svoboda, an instructor with Atlantis Swim School of Cary, was promoted to the position of lead instructor. She will use her experience, which includes many years of teaching swimming as well as multiple certifications ranging from CPR instructor to certified pool operator, to teach Atlantis students and to provide professional development for the school’s other instructors. Ginger Castle owns the school.


Andria Lake, publisher of www.InsideHollySprings.com has launched www.Printing Easy.com, an on-line wholesale-to-the-public printing and mailing service.


Jill Wells Heath, president of Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, a Raleigh-based, multi-million dollar civil engineering and consulting firm, was named to the additional post of CEO. Wells has been part of the firm since its inception and has served as its CPA and chief financial officer.


Jeanette Blankeship, owner of Interiors by Decorating Den in the Raleigh area, is commemorating the anniversary of her business by participating in the Interiors by Decorating Den Beautiful Birthday Celebration sale. 


Strategic branding and advertising firm Howard, Merrell & Partners of Raleigh announced:
Robin Rogers joined the creative department as production manager. Rogers works with the creative team and outside vendors to produce print ads, collateral, direct mail, tradeshow materials and specialty items.
Claire Howell was promoted to associate account executive in the public relations department.

J. Davis Architects of Raleigh announced:
Carmen C. Dunn, office manager and human resources administrator, was named an associate with the firm.
Sarah Yu-tung Alexander, RLA, ASLA, joined the firm as a project manager.


Praise Wortham was named project manager of Morrisville’s Centrifuge Media, a multimedia, audiovisual and technology solutions company. She is responsible for the implementation of audiovisual elements for national and international productions.


Crystal Hughes, CPA, was named partner of the Raleigh office of VACO, a national consulting and executive placement firm. In addition to serving as a member of the firm’s executive team, she is responsible for its accounting and financial projects, client relations and community outreach programs.


Juana Gustin-Quick joined Raleigh’s Cross + Associates, an advertising agency primarily serving the education and healthcare industries, as director of business development. She is responsible for researching and attracting new clients, and she will serve as a liaison between clients and the agency’s account service, media and creative teams.


Janice Russell, president of Cary-based Minding Your Matters Organizing, achieved the highest level of education offered by the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization and is now a master trainer.


Health

The Woman’s Club of Raleigh said David Crabtree, news anchor for WRAL-TV and board member of Hospice of Wake County, will serve as honorary chair for the preview party of the group’s ASID Designer Showhouse. The preview party on May 9 is the inaugural event for this year’s showhouse. The showhouse will be open to the public daily from May 10 through June 1 and will showcase two state-of-the art townhomes in Ramblewood at North Hills, Raleigh. Proceeds will benefit Hospice of Wake County as well as other community organizations and programs supported by the Woman’s Club of Raleigh.


Dr. Angela Baylis, doctor of chiropractic, will serve on the executive committee for the 2008 Speaking of Women’s Health conference as program chair. The conference is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the Raleigh Convention Center. Baylis, of Raleigh, will coordinate speakers and lead the direction of the programming for 20 breakout sessions.


Gynecology and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Raleigh announced:
• Dr. Tammy Hilbert has joined the practice as a specialist in advanced laparoscopy and hysteroscopy techniques.

• Dr. Lisa Roberts, president and CEO, will serve on a physician’s advisory panel for Conceptus, innovator of medical devices for women’s health.


Organizations

Soroptimist International of Raleigh, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, presented Lenora Ucko, Ph.D. the Making a Difference for Women Award. She was honored for her contributions to ending violence, particularly in the arena of domestic violence prevention. Ucko pioneered therapeutic storytelling, the use of folk story analysis for empowering listeners, particularly abused women, to find deeper insights, clearer self-understanding and creative alternatives to very difficult situations. She founded StoriesWork, a nonprofit organization.


The Raleigh-Durham chapter of the American Advertising Federation announced the winners of its 2008 ADDY Awards Competition at a reception at the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham. The awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing exceptional advertising created in the Triangle region including print, broadcast, out-of-home and public service advertising. Sue Toth was chair of this year’s awards. Those honored with gold and silver ADDYS are eligible to compete in the district competition and have an opportunity to move onto the national ADDY competition.


The North Carolina Center for Women in Public Service is accepting applications for its 2008 Summer Institute, an intensive leadership program that prepares women to seek elected or appointed office. The program will be held at Peace College in Raleigh over two extended weekends. Up to 20 women will be selected. The participants will hone their leadership skills, prepare for political campaigning and develop tools for effective and ethical public service. Featured presenters will include state and local elected officials, professors, media experts, leadership trainers and political strategists.


Patty Briguglio, president of MMI Associates, a Raleigh-based public relations firm, has been named to the Go Red for Women executive leadership team. Briguglio will help raise awareness of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women, by supporting the Go Red for Women luncheon.


Dorothy Bass Burch, a partner in Ragsdale Liggett’s corporate and real estate law departments, has been named the 2008 Triangle Commercial Real Estate Women special awards officer and director of the board of directors for the fourth consecutive year. Burch is responsible for the management and coordination of the annual Champions Awards, which honors projects, owners and professionals for excellence in the commercial real estate industry. This year’s event will be April 24 at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary.


Kelly MarCom, an integrated branding and advertising agency, announed that graphic designers Jessica Duensing and Jessica Padgett were selected as winners of the AIGA Raleigh chapter’s “re|THINK” poster competition. The competition asked designers to create a poster that inspires Carolinians to care about and protect the environment.


Andrea Hunnicutt Grater of IBD Insurance Services, an agency specializing in group and individual health coverage, has been named secretary of Chix In Business, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women business owners succeed.


Susan Folckemer, CPM, executive vice president of acquisition and development for the Preiss Company of Raleigh, presented at this year’s National Apartment Association’s Student Housing Conference. Founded by Donna Preiss, the company is the largest provider of off-campus student housing for N.C. State University, Clemson University, UNC Charlotte and the University of Texas in Austin.

Real Estate

Carrie Klein, veteran home stager and redesigner, announced the opening of Carrie Klein Design, of Chapel Hill. The firm will service real estate brokers and their clients in the Triangle. Formerly based in Stamford, Ct., Klein worked primarily in Fairfield County.


Debbie Houston, president of Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston Builder Services of Raleigh, announced:

Deanna Buchanan is the builder representative for the Peakway Village community in Apex.

Allison Moriarty is vice president of sales and marketing for the firm. She works with developers, builders and on-site agents to provide sales and marketing services for more than 50 new home communities.
Kelly Talbot, senior marketing manager, has earned her certified marketing professional designation.
