Lorana Price, CEO and creative director of Holy Cow Branding in Cary, was named an advisor to the board of the Achievement Academy of Durham. Price will help the academy develop a professional image and reputation in the community. The Achievement Academy of Durham enables hard-working students who have dropped out of high school and are living in poverty to become employed citizens by pairing formal education with the teaching of personal and leadership skills.
Lorraine Stephens, president of Lorraine Speaks and L. Stephens & Associates of Raleigh, was named to the first Diversity Advisory Board of the N.C. State University College of Management. The board’s initial meeting focused on bringing together diversity leaders, managers and directors from 14 Triangle-area companies with strong diversity initiatives and three College of Management faculty members.
The American Dance Festival, based in Durham, will award distinguished choreographer and musician Laura Dean with the 2008 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. The annual, $50,000 honor recognizes those who have dedicated their lives and talent to the creation of modern dance.
Raleigh artist Suzy Andron will donate a percentage of all sales of her artwork to benefit the Alliance of AIDS Services Carolina. Over the years, Andron has become intimately involved with the group, donating artwork to the Triangle’s annual Works of Heart Art Auction Against AIDS and supporting it in various capacities. Andron specializes in painting abstract art in a format known as polytych.
The Raleigh Professional Women’s Forum, an organization of professionals and executives, announced that First Citizens Bank and WakeMed Health & Hospitals will be title sponsors for the 2008 Pages to Podium luncheon, set for April 24 at the Brier Creek Country Club. Pages to Podium is a biannual author’s series that brings a national speaker to the Triangle. This year it’s Kathy Reichs, renowned forensic anthropologist, best-selling author and inspiration for the television series, “Bones.”
Cary’s Sonya May has written “The Joy Commitment: Live the Life You Want to Live,” which asks why we settle for being fairly happy when we can be really happy. May, who is also a speaker and seminar leader, teaches about the power of conscious choice.
Devin Cofield, CEO of Trinity Consulting Services, has written “Emotional Wellness for Women,” published through the Professional Woman Network. This is the first of a three-part series on women’s health from Cofield, who lives in Holly Springs.
Rondy McKee, co-owner of White Tiger Taekwondo in Cary, was the focus of the cover story in Taekwondo Times Magzine. McKee recently tested for her 6th degree black belt in Olympic Style Taekwondo and holds an additional 13 black belt ranks in other styles. In addition to various business awards, White Tiger, which has more than 2,500 active students, was given the Community Service Award by the Chamber of Commerce for continuing efforts to raise money for charity. McKee began her martial arts training more than 20 years ago as a means of self-defense.

Peggy Bloodworth is the owner of Entrée Vous on Renaissance Parkway in Durham, Maria Calabretta and Valerie Gallagher have the Cary/Morrisville location on Davis Drive, Catherine Caputo is the owner at Towne North on Creedmoor Road in Raleigh and Erin Cohen owns the location at Poyner Place in Raleigh. Entrée Vous, a meal preparation kitchen, offers customers a number of options for buying meals. They can assemble their own food or have it made for them to be ready for pick up.
Julie Chapin signed an agreement to open Dogtopia, a full-service dog daycare, spa and boarding facility in Durham. The business manager is her friend Elaine Anninos. This will be the third Dogtopia in the Triangle, following locations in development in Raleigh and Cary.

The Woman’s Club of Raleigh said David Crabtree, news anchor for WRAL-TV and board member of Hospice of Wake County, will serve as honorary chair for the preview party of the group’s ASID Designer Showhouse. The preview party on May 9 is the inaugural event for this year’s showhouse. The showhouse will be open to the public daily from May 10 through June 1 and will showcase two state-of-the art townhomes in Ramblewood at North Hills, Raleigh. Proceeds will benefit Hospice of Wake County as well as other community organizations and programs supported by the Woman’s Club of Raleigh.
Dr. Angela Baylis, doctor of chiropractic, will serve on the executive committee for the 2008 Speaking of Women’s Health conference as program chair. The conference is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the Raleigh Convention Center. Baylis, of Raleigh, will coordinate speakers and lead the direction of the programming for 20 breakout sessions.

Soroptimist International of Raleigh, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, presented Lenora Ucko, Ph.D. the Making a Difference for Women Award. She was honored for her contributions to ending violence, particularly in the arena of domestic violence prevention. Ucko pioneered therapeutic storytelling, the use of folk story analysis for empowering listeners, particularly abused women, to find deeper insights, clearer self-understanding and creative alternatives to very difficult situations. She founded StoriesWork, a nonprofit organization.
The Raleigh-Durham chapter of the American Advertising Federation announced the winners of its 2008 ADDY Awards Competition at a reception at the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham. The awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing exceptional advertising created in the Triangle region including print, broadcast, out-of-home and public service advertising. Sue Toth was chair of this year’s awards. Those honored with gold and silver ADDYS are eligible to compete in the district competition and have an opportunity to move onto the national ADDY competition.
The North Carolina Center for Women in Public Service is accepting applications for its 2008 Summer Institute, an intensive leadership program that prepares women to seek elected or appointed office. The program will be held at Peace College in Raleigh over two extended weekends. Up to 20 women will be selected. The participants will hone their leadership skills, prepare for political campaigning and develop tools for effective and ethical public service. Featured presenters will include state and local elected officials, professors, media experts, leadership trainers and political strategists.
Patty Briguglio, president of MMI Associates, a Raleigh-based public relations firm, has been named to the Go Red for Women executive leadership team. Briguglio will help raise awareness of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women, by supporting the Go Red for Women luncheon.
Dorothy Bass Burch, a partner in Ragsdale Liggett’s corporate and real estate law departments, has been named the 2008 Triangle Commercial Real Estate Women special awards officer and director of the board of directors for the fourth consecutive year. Burch is responsible for the management and coordination of the annual Champions Awards, which honors projects, owners and professionals for excellence in the commercial real estate industry.
