The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center appointed Crystal Harden director of outreach programs. Harden’s wide range of experience in formal and informal science education includes serving as an education-programs consultant for the California Dept. of Education. Born and raised in Wilson County, Harden received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from N.C. Central University in Durham and a master’s degree in teaching from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Virginia G. Parker, vice president at Paragon Commercial Bank, with headquarters in Raleigh, has been appointed to a four-year term on the N.C. Principal Fellows Commission. Parker’s appointment was made by N.C. superintendent June Atkinson. As a member of the commission, Parker will assist in determining criteria for fellows as well as the method of selection and choosing recipients of scholarship loans. The Principal Fellows Program was established by the state’s General Assembly to encourage excellence in the recruitment of candidates for education-leadership programs.
St. Martin’s Press published Dawn Shamp’s debut novel, “On Account of Conspicuous Women,” which is set in Roxboro, where four ladies are poised to take on potlucks and politics in this picture of the South. Shamp lives in Durham.
The American Dance Festival will give an award to Dianne McIntyre, a woman who acted to preserve the traditions of modern dance while continuing to expand and broaden its definition. In a June 28 ceremony in Griffith Theater at Duke University in Durham, she’ll receive the 2008 Balasaraswati/ Joy Ann Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching. For more than 30 years, McIntyre has been a celebrated choreographer, teacher and dancer.
Lisa Sanfilippo and her husband, Mike, launched CreativElectric after working more than 10 years in the residential remodel business. Headquartered in Chapel Hill and taking appointments throughout the Triangle, CreativElectric handles not just electrical projects but also skilled appliance replacement and home repairs.
Sugarland, a bakery and café, opened on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. It’s owned by Katrina Ryan, the former pastry chef at La Residence.
JDavis Architects announced that Joleen Lockhart, AIA, an architect in the Raleigh office, has passed the Architectural Registration Examination. The test, prepared by the National Council of Architectural Registration Board, formally licenses North Carolina architects. Each candidate for licensure must obtain a passing score in all nine divisions of the ARE, which are pre-design, site planning, building planning, building technology, general structures, lateral forces, mechanical and electrical, materials and methods, and construction documents. Lockhart, who oversees four commercial projects totaling $15 million, has more than 10 years of industry experience. The Durham resident earned a bachelor’s degree of environmental design in architecture and a master’s degree of architecture from N.C. State University in Raleigh.
Anne Hainsworth was appointed director of public relations for Koroberi, a business-to-business integrated marketing agency based in Chapel Hill. Prior to joining Koroberi, Hainsworth worked as an account supervisor for Fleishman-Hillard in both Washington, D.C. and Raleigh, where she managed public-relations accounts for top-tier clients in the pharmaceutical, healthcare and high-tech industries. Lisa Piercy has joined the law firm of Ragsdale Liggett in Raleigh to direct its Lobbying and Government Relations Group. Piercy has more than 20 years of government-relations experience. Prior to joining Ragsdale Liggett, she owned and operated a Triangle lobbying and consulting firm for 11 years. She was on the staff of U.S. Sen. Terry Sanford, served as assistant secretary in the N.C. Dept. of Administration, and worked as an entrepreneurial-development specialist for the N.C. Dept. of Commerce. Gov. Hunt appointed Piercy to the N.C. Employment Security Commission.
Erin Sterling of Frank Harmon Architect, a firm based in Raleigh, has successfully completed her exams and is a registered architect and a member of the American Institute of Architects. Sterling has served as a project architect on many of the firm’s significant projects, including the N.C. Botanical Garden Visitor Education Center in Chapel Hill and the Walnut Creek Urban Wetland Park in Raleigh.
For the ninth consecutive year, the Mobil Five-Star Award has been awarded to The Fearrington House Country Inn of Pittsboro. The Fearrington House’s rating earned it a place on Mobil Travel Guide’s list of top properties in the United States and Canada for 2008. Only 41 hotels in the country received this award and The Fearrington House remains the only Mobil Five-Star property in North Carolina, says Theresa Chiettini, its general manager.
Dawn Cupero, owner of Vines Bistro, announced that it’s launching a charity-dinner program. The new Italian-inspired restaurant, located in Cary’s Maynard Crossing, will hold bi-monthly charity dinners, submitting a portion of the proceeds to the organization it has selected for the evening. The first event, on March 11, will benefit The Carying Place, which teaches homeless families with children necessary life skills for attaining independent living while providing them with short-term housing support services.
Dr. Lisa Roberts, president and CEO of Gynecology and Laparoscopic Surgeons in Raleigh, announced the release of a podcast discussing laparoscopy, a procedure in which a laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen through a small incision, allowing the doctor to view the area on a television monitor. The practice’s physicians also include Dr. Tammy Hilbert and Dr. Elizabeth Roede Barbee.

Elizabeth Wallace, director of corporate affairs for restaurant-operator Rocky Top Hospitality, has been named to the leadership committee of the American Cancer Society’s Triangle Swing Fore a Cure. Rocky Top’s 1705 Prime Steakhouse, in Raleigh, is a platinum sponsor of the annual golf tournament, scheduled for April 28 at the Raleigh Country Club. The restaurant is hosting a pre-tournament casino night April 27.
Cathy Rosebaugh-Jennings, president of Alterna Home Solutions, has been appointed to the City of Raleigh Senior Corps Advisory Council. As a council member, Rosebaugh-Jennings will assist in expanding programs and fund development activities in addition to developing program awareness within the community. Senior Corps projects include the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, one of the country’s largest volunteer organizations for adults older than 55, and the Foster Grandparent Program.
The Triangle Interiors by Decorating Den team has partnered with the Me Fine Foundation to assist families of critically ill children by helping Decorating Den’s clients donate their gently used furniture to the organization. Once Me Fine receives the furniture, the organization will sell it at one of its two consignment centers or give it to families who need that type of support while their children are receiving medical attention. Carolyn Jordan is regional director of Interiors by Decorating Den. Lisa Valentino is executive director of the Me Fine Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance for children and families at Duke Children’s Hospital and the N.C. Children’s Hospital at UNC.
