Academics

Kate Harris, a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won a 2006 Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University in England.

Outgoing member Barbara Flood was honored for her 15 years of service on the Wake Technical Community College board of trustees. She received a resolution stating she served “with dedicated, exemplary and enlightened leadership to provide Wake County with a comprehensive community college.”

Dr. AnnaMarie Connolly, an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a physician at UNC Hospitals, received the H. Fleming Fuller Award, which recognizes doctors who demonstrate compassionate patient care and excellence in teaching and community service.

Arts

Barbara Ann Horton O’Conner opened For Art’s Sake, a cooperative gallery, last month in Wendell.

Sonya Lorelle won first place and Tara Allison won third in the North Carolina 8th Annual Songwriters Contest, held at the Carrboro ArtsCenter.

“Long Tails, Short Tails and No Tails — Coming to America,” a children’s book by Linda Larson, an advertising and graphic-design instructor at Wake Technical Community College, was recently published.

“Japanland,” a four-part travel series by Raleigh-native Karin Muller, premiered on UNC-TV, starting Dec. 13 and concluding Jan. 3.

The American Dance Festival in Durham is accepting entries for its 2006 T-shirt Design Contest. The winner receives tickets to two 2006 performances and her choice of ADF merchandise.

Plant the Arts: Grow North Carolina, was nominated for a regional Emmy award in the category of PSA Campaigns at The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 20th Annual Midsouth Regional Emmy Awards. Karen Wells, of Raleigh, is the executive director of the campaign.

Kate Look, of Chapel Hill, started an online shop specializing in European toys and baby gifts at www.BlueberryForest.com.

Alison Kim McLaurin recently opened Tikilynn Cards & Notes, a Raleigh-based greeting-card company.

Jennifer Snyder, a Durham-based life coach for women, was a featured expert on holiday stress for a Winston-Salem radio station.

Kristen Carmack was named mortgage banker with First Citizens Bank in Garner.

Bonnie McPeake, owner and operator of the Best Western Pinehurst Motor Inn in Southern Pines, was elected to the Best Western International board of directors. She is the only female member.

The Castleton group, a human-resources outsourcing firm in Raleigh, is sponsoring Kiara, a child from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Suzanne Clifton is the president of the company.

Sandra Lunsford, of Durham, and Debbie Lew, of Mebane, opened Brick Alley Antiques in downtown Mebane.

Sandy Heard, of Durham, was invited to make a return appearance on QVC’s “Great Gifts” show to present her product, “Shining Star.”

DITY Beads, an Apex-based design-it-yourself jewelry company, announced:
• Scarlette Davis, of Holly Springs, and Kelly Newborn, of Benson, joined as independent design consultants.
• Jennifer Myers and Scarlette Davis were promoted to the 2-Star Consultant level and earned training and development bonuses.
• Christy Bounds earned a weekend getaway for her success with home jewelry parties. Also, she recruited two new members and now leads teams in five states.
• Deborah McNaughton, founder and CEO, announced that the company now has independent consultants in seven states.

Candy Pitcher recently joined MMI Associates, a Raleigh-based marketing and public relations firm, as operations manager. Also, Patty Briguglio, president of the firm, was appointed to the Business Advisory Council by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Tammy Willis joined the staff of Elite Electrolysis and Laser Clinic. Melissa Smith is the owner of the clinic.

Shilpa M. Pai joined Lewis Associates, Consulting and Psychological Services in Raleigh as a psychologist. Dr. Pai will provide evaluation and treatment of substance abuse, as well as couple’s and family therapy.

Heather Anderson was promoted to spa director at Synergy Spa in Raleigh.

Patty Sabol, a licensed massage and bodywork therapist, recently opened Metta Unlimited in Raleigh and is offering Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, a form of barefoot massage.

 

Organizations

Gingerbread LittleVersity hosted a drive for the Fuquay-Varina Food Pantry and a Turkey Raffle, with all proceeds going to the Fuquay-Varina police department’s Cops for Kids program. Kelli Ketner is the owner of the child-care facility.

Cynthia Anderson, managing partner of CD Anderson, P.A., was named to the advisory board of the Women’s Center of Wake County.

Leslie Duncan of Cary was installed as president of North Carolina Mothers of Multiples at the club’s annual state convention. Sue Reyer, also of Cary, was installed as treasurer.

Christy Geiger of Cary was selected as the Raleigh City Director for Coachville, an international career and life coaching organization.

Mr. Toad’s Coffeehouse & Roasters in Cary contributed 5 percent of its total net sales and $1 from each pound of coffee beans sold during November and December to Interact of Wake County. Stephanie Lake Britt is owner of the coffee house.

The Fearrington House Country Inn in Pittsboro received a 27 overall rating (out of a possible 30) from the 2006 Zagat survey of top U.S. hotels, resorts and spas.

Jan Delory, president and senior consultant of Boston Professional group, an RTP-based business-development company, was the featured guest speaker at last month’s meeting of the Women Business Owners Network of Cary.

North Carolina Women United, a coalition of groups and individuals who supports women’s issues, released its 2005 Legislative Report Card last month, which tracks bills in the General Assembly. The results are available at www.ncwu.org.

The Triangle Chapter of the National Association of Catering Executives announced the following winners of its 2005 Awards, planned by social director Beth Pendergrass:

The Center for Employment Training in Durham celebrated its 10-year anniversary.

Pines of Carolina Girl Scout Council received a grant of $95,000 from the Dove Self-Esteem Fund to implement it’s “Uniquely ME!” program.

Habitat for Humanity’s 5th annual holiday home tour raised more than $225,000 to construct homes for families in Wake County.
