Fashion Heats Up
What's trending now
By Debra Simon
As Triangle stores continue to welcome back shoppers, fresh looks are on the racks. Here are a few of the trends we love.
Crafty
The feel is handmade, homespun, artisanal. The biggest trend is crochet, which much like knitting is a process of creating a fabric by interlocking strands of yarn. But this isn't Garner Grandma's handicraft. Designers are thinking outside the box and, for example, showing lots of skin-baring styles. Luxury details include glam fringe, drawstrings borrowed from athleisure and intricately patterned lace.
Shorts
We're not just talking about old cutoffs you wear to Carolina Beach. This is a fresh fashion trend, shown in every conceivable color, material, length and shape. They're sparkly or baggy or tailored. Some pass the knee while others are barely there. Itty bitty versions are balanced out with long-sleeve shirts. Hesitant to go full-on hot pants in North Raleigh? Add black tights.
Draped
Lush folds of fabric are all the rage whether they're in a skirt cut on the bias, a sumptuous dress with ruching or sleeves accented with gatherings. The luxe silhouettes include flowy long dresses and pants that billow about the body with a hippie vibe, asymmetrical slip dresses, and tiny or prominent pleats. Browsing Triangle stores? Look for garments whose draping enhances your torso.
Sexy
Lingerie becomes daywear this season. Bras, whether simple or jeweled, layered over tanks or under blazers, are tops. References to negligees are seen in all kinds of garments. There are sheer slip dresses and garter waist belts. Silhouettes are corseted. Basically, underwear is outerwear. Too much for your day in Durham? Choose a dress or skirt with a deep side slit.
