When Carolina Women editors observed models sauntering down catwalks at New York Fashion Week, it seemed like 1980 all over again: elite pleats, go-with-the-flow ruffles, big shoulders, graphic prints, black leather, animal effects, color-block garments.

 

But it's 2018, so the collections didn't just mine the past but also peered into the future with innovative silhouettes and materials, including earthy maxi-dresses, boyfriend blazers, contrasting florals and shiny metallics.

 

The takeaway: This season, there's something for everyone. In the last issue, we covered the '80s trend as well as Boho, Blooms, and Hue.

FUTURISTIC

Designers deliver tailored classics, including skirt suits, in tweedy materials, herringbone, glen plaid and houndstooth. Flamboyant colors, such as hot crimson and kelly green, add a touch of femme to the preppy feel.

 

 

FRILLS

Fringe, feathers, fuzzy sleeves and pleats add romance to the season. Ruching (gathering fabric to cause a dynamic ripple) is back, too. This effect may hug your curves, but it simultaneously flatters your body, so it's a win-win.

 

ANIMALIA

Designers are going wild for animal prints. From leopard to cheetah, zebra to tiger, the untamed patterns are often worn head-to-toe. Even the black-and-white polka dots of snow leopards are roaring for attention.
