The new crop of spring denim
By Debra Simon
Those old college dungarees? So last week. Stylish denim walked proudly through spring fashion shows in New York and directly into stores from Triangle Town Center to Southpoint.
Designers practically reinvented classic blues this season, so there are many ways to do it right. Raw hems. High-waists. Printed denim. The new distressed. Darker and lighter washes. Nostalgic nods to the '70s and '90s.
And it's not just about bottoms. Dresses, skirts, jackets, overalls, shorts and shirts made of the material are all in the mix.
Here's a glance at some of the nouveau denim appearing in the Triangle:
Cropped and flared
Show a little ankle! These pair nicely with warm-weather faves, such as simple T-shirts and sandals or sneakers. Pants too long? Roll 'em up.
Frayed hems
Yes – this means an intentionally unfinished bottom edge. Fashion-forward Triangle women rock this look with strappy sandals and leather jackets.
Dresses and skirts
Up-style the dress for work with refined jewelry or throw on a cool belt for casual dressing. When it comes to skirts, you'll find everything from distressed minis to glam-grunge maxis.
Jean jacket
Triangle women welcome the opportunity to toss on a topper in chilly offices. Must-haves include the denim trench, car coat and duster as well as elongated, cut-out and cropped versions.
One-piece jumpsuit, shorts suit or overalls
The sassy piece, often turned out in a pretty pattern, gives off a '70s vibe. Go comfy by tucking a crop top under the overall straps.
Matching, multilayered sets
The popular chambray shirt often comes into play here. Use it to top your slacks or embellished skirts. Add a burst of color with bright accessories.
Loose and cool
If you typically live in bootcuts or boyfriends, now's your chance to go refined. Extra-long and wide-cut, these jeans can be paired with tailored garments, such as fitted shirts and blazers and classy spring shoes.
